The short version

  • Soundwalk Collective spent about ten years recording remote places, and Patti Smith answered each set of recordings with poetry.
  • The resulting installations of sound, video and spoken word open at Triennale Milano on November 26 and run until March 7.
  • Smith and the collective perform the work live at the Teatro Lirico Giorgio Gaber on November 26 and 27.

Correspondences began as an exchange. Soundwalk Collective made field recordings in remote places over roughly ten years and sent them to Patti Smith, who replied with poetry. The places include ones tied to poets, filmmakers and revolutionaries, and ones marked by climate change. One chapter, Correspondences Vol. 2, released in March 2025, is built from the soundscapes of Chernobyl. The collaboration now runs to more than a decade.

The exhibition opens at Triennale Milano, Viale Alemagna 6, on November 26 and runs until March 7, presented with the Fondation Cartier. It is a set of immersive installations of sound, video and spoken word, plus graphic works. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:30 am to 8 pm, with last entry at 7 pm. Neither listing gives an admission price yet.

The same week, Smith and the collective perform Correspondences Live at the Teatro Lirico Giorgio Gaber, Via Larga 14, on November 26 and 27 at 8 pm. The Fondation Cartier says the live version reverses the usual order: sound leads, and Smith’s voice moves over the recordings. Tickets are sold through TicketOne.
