About Audient

An independent magazine about sound, waves and the science of feeling better — written for people who want the wonder without the hype.

Sound is the oldest medicine and the newest one. People have sung to the sick for as long as there have been people; this year a 670-patient trial will tell us whether an hour a day of 40 Hz light and sound slows Alzheimer’s disease. Between those two facts sits an enormous, noisy, mostly unexamined industry — sound baths and sleep buds, “healing frequencies” and hospital music programs, cathedral installations and whale song — and almost nobody reading the studies.

Audient does. We read the research, we talk to the people doing the work, and we write it up in plain language with the numbers attached: how many people, for how long, compared with what. When something holds up, we say so. When it does not, we say that too, and we try to explain why people keep coming back anyway, because that is usually the more interesting story.

What you will find here

  • Features — long reads on the ideas and trials that will decide what “sound healing” means in five years.
  • Science — one study at a time, with its design and its limits.
  • Practice — things you can try tonight, with an honest line about what to expect.
  • Culture — the places, instruments and people that make sound worth listening to.
  • Briefs — the week in sound, read for you.
  • Explainers — the physics and physiology, from the pressure wave to the cochlea.

How we work

Every article ends with its sources. We cite journals and institutions before press releases, and press releases before everything else. We do not run sponsored content, we do not sell supplements or courses, and we do not accept gifts from the companies we cover. Where an article links to a product, it is one we believe in, the link is marked, and the small commission is disclosed. Our standards are written down in How we report.

Who we are

Audient Consciousness began in 2018 as a small practice exploring sound and consciousness. In 2026 it became a publication. It is independently owned and edited from Virginia, with help from a research assistant that reads a great deal and is checked by a human before anything is published.

Say hello
